Mod Organizer and Custom Follower Creation

Welp. Rumarin is dead.

Forever.

Unless I restart Adriel’s save and recreate Rumarin’s mod from scratch. Which I don’t particularly want to do.

…But Rumarin.

I’m casting out my net. Figured doing it here wouldn’t hurt nothin.

I have spoken to other people about this, and they cheerily say nope, no problem at all with follower appearances made through MO.

But I do. Every time. I have to just do it oldschool through Skyrim/Data.

So here’s what happens. My workflow.

  • Use MO to get all the basics set up. Skin, outfit, combat style, etc.
  • Migrate all my working files (including skeletons and everything else under the sun) to Skyrim/Data.
  • Launch CK from the Skyrim folder, load mod.
  • Place NPC in the world.
  • Export facegen files.
  • NifMerge.
  • Verify merge is successful, change paths as needed.
  • Migrate mod back to MO.
  • Et voila!

Now that sounds fine and dandy. A bit roundabout, but if it works, hey. If I place the NPC (which is the confirmed point of failure) and do the merge without scooting over to direct CK, the merge won’t take. The nif will be the head I created, but it won’t actually be recognized. If I go the roundabout route, it’s fine. Unless something has to change.

If you have to change something in the mod – ANYTHING – you have to go through Skyrim’s CK directly. Or your NPC’s head will revert. And at that point, they’re hosed. Forever. You can’t just reload a save or remake the mod mid-game. You can’t just re-merge the head. They’re broken forever. Oh my god you should’ve seen me with Erevan. Like a Wagnerian drama it was!

Anyway I’d discovered that Rumarin wasn’t using his skin set because I forget to, well, set it.

No big deeeeal, just TES5Edit that shit.

…Oh, I can’t.

No big deeeeeal, it’s just a drop-down menu. I don’t even have to look at him!

*loads game*

“Rumarin, your plastic surgery is gone!”

“Oh, is it? Jolly good, I meant to say at my last appointment I think the Botox was making me a bit ill. Anyway, off to Adventureland!”

“No go away I hate you now.”

“But-”

“Leave me!” *turns black-and-white and collapses onto fainting couch and then Vincent Price shows up for some reason*

Clearly I’m doing something wrong. I did a screenshare with someone in Discord just the other day to help walk them through the follower process and saw WITH MY OWN TWO EYES that they did everything start-to-finish in MO, and it turned out perfectly!

Is it because I’m not running NifMerge through MO?

Should I try that?

Adriel loves Rumarin so. I mean, he’d love him anyway, but his skin tones no longer match and nor do his textures and that’s really the issue here.

If someone has insight it’s welcome. Meanwhile I post an update if something neat happens. Meanwhile I think maybe I’ll see about giving Rumarin a new makeover. I think I overdid some things.

Yeah so this is why when people were calling me crazy when I had two Skyrim installations on two separate computers with CK on the one and MO on the other… I just laughed. Even though it was a pain in the ass transferring files over my local network, I did it.

AND this is why I have the same kind of workflow that you do for this stuff. Because virtual file structure works great until it doesn’t. I have to do my poser mod merges out of the Data file as well.

I have lots of copies of my own npcs mod which I don’t dare touch thanks to all of this. If I’m not mistaken one of the times I changed someone I literally made a new mod to change the meshes and textures and loaded it below my NPC mod.

In my case it isn’t the head meshes/blackface bug (usually. I changed eye meshes and thank heavens that was on a copy of the mod)— it’s usually that I can’t get tintmasks to show up. At all. Ever. Unless it’s a test iteration of a character that I plan to redo, then it works great.

I don’t know what it is about MO that hates CK or vice-versa. Or what it is about NifMerge that hates me.

I actually have to make a couple NPCs soon, I could try if you wanna hand me the meshes and textures.

By the way that issue you had with the naked-body outfit– I noted this when I tried to update the skins of TM Thalmor, which I liked the face sculpts on but wanted special skins on. At first it worked great and they all had their new and unique-to-Thalmor face textures and body textures; then one day they unaccountably no longer were wearing their body textures– and as soon as I touched those– yeaaah. Now I need to redo my entire 2000 person NPC merge file just to fix that– how many people are in Skyrim anyways?, one of the many projects I’m stalling on.

Also that mod Familiar Faces? Avoid like the plague if you do this kind of work, it’s the devil. I don’t know why. I’d love to get it working but it does NOT like messing with textures of any kind.

Well I appreciate the offer, but it’s not that I can’t remake him or get him working, it’s just that IN THAT GAME he will no longer be changed. Ever. Except having the wrong head on the altered body. I can replace him right this instant, and start Adriel fifty gajillion years before ever even loading the character, and he will be broken. I do not know why this is and it makes me mad enough to spit.

I don’t have very many issues with shit in the long-run, but boy, when I do, they’re the ones that just really get under your skin. At the very least.

I’ve spent way too much time on the computer and on thisHOWEVER Rumarin…4.0? Is he 4.0 at this point? Probably. Any way he is new and just ever-so-cute. Let us pray that he stays that way.

    AAAAAAAH.

Okay, my new workflow for leaving comments shall be: Control-C once done. Ahem.

I have EXACTLY the same issues with MO. MO is the devil for making NPCs. Same workflow. In fact before I gave the old laptop to the kid, I had another installation of Skyrim (Do you know what a pain in the ass that is? Steam throws an anti-hacker message EVERY time) on it and pulled files across to it via my local network to work there; in peace, with my CK kept far, far away from MO.

    They are not happy roommates.

What you’re having happen with your face sculpts I keep having happen with my tint masks. It does not matter how I make them or where I put them or how many times I use Nifskope to stick them to every head mesh I can find– in-game they are gone. GONE. So this is why I attach those little bastards to the diffuse map. I know I’m not the only one, either– I see so many male NPCs with no lip or cheek or under-eye color at-all.

oh how i hate nifmerge. Hey, everything looks great– EXCEPT YOU FORGOT A HAIRLINE.

sigh I guess I am just impatient.

Also someone did a new 3dNPC overhaul like– today? Huh. Well, the Rumarin’s not as cute as yours but he’s better than my other one and so I’m snagging it.

Yeah I dunno why Akismet decided you were spam all of a sudden, but I get notified. So if it doesn’t show up it’s just I haven’t seen the email yet.

I’ll post pics of New Rumarin. I might post him to download (and the other one why not) just because there’s no use wasting these mods that make me cry. lol

Well, I’ll certainly not kick him out for eating crackers on the couch, lol.

I have Akismet too but it’s only put up one spam warning so far, so idk.

So, forgive me if this is a noob question, but after you’ve created your custom NPC’s, do you go through the steps of saving them like a mod that you’d put out on Nexus or someplace? What I mean is, create a 7-zip file and save it somewhere?

In case you can’t tell, I’ve never created a custom char. πŸ˜€ Every time I think about spending some time learning how to do it, I read comments like yours and Syl’s and I think, “Nah”. So do all of my peeps have the same skin? Yep. Does it look good? Is it, I dare say, immersive? Nah. Do I care? Not if it means tearing more of my hair out and throwing my computer out the window.

All I can say is you gals have WAY more patience than I do! πŸ˜€

And now I’m about to throw my computer out the window anyway. Ctrl – C. >:|

Ctrl+C about the comment? It just takes a sec, don’t worry. And if it takes longer than a sec, it’s just waiting on me. I have 36 hours to approve a comment if its been marked as spam, which yours wasn’t. It’s just a slow server sometimes.

As for followers, it’s really not that difficult if you just go about it the normal way. It’s certainly tedious, but it’s not difficult until you get into custom voices and whatnot…and you can’t pay me enough πŸ˜›

  • jumarbye

What it was doing was saying I was making a duplicate comment. And then it wouldn’t let me post it. So I contol-c’d in case I had to start over, but luckily all I had to do was add a few more words onto my already wordy comment, and it accepted it. πŸ˜€

    • RefurbMadness

Well I just have no idea what to do about that. How does that even happen? I really hope these are just growing pains…
